Deutschland, Ende April 1945.... Der Russe drängt mit seinen Angriffsmassen von Süden, Osten und Norden in die deutsche Hauptstadt. Im Westen marschieren schwächere Einheiten russischer Infanteriedivisionen auf, um die belagerte Hauptstadt völlig einzuschließen. Der Russe plant, bei Werder über die Havel zu rollen, um in Richtung Potsdam und Nauen zwei Stoßkeile in den Rücken der Deutschen zu treiben. Die Deutschen werfen alle verfügbaren Kampfgruppen nach Werder und Potsdam, um die Einschließung von Westen her zu verhindern. Führen sie die zunehmend heftig bedrängten Deutschen in einen immer hoffungsloseren Kampf. Es kann kein Sieg mehr errungen werden. Es geht vor allem darum, hier zu halten, um den Fluchtweg aus der Hauptstadt so lange wie möglich offen zu halten.
