[Video] Basic modding (+ Installation) Tutorial

Beitrag von Kvantovy »

Hi,
I posted this originally on Steam Discussions > Modding. One user suggested to post it also here.

Video linked below covers following topics:
- download & installation of tools
- opening existing mod & making a new one
- changing geometry of the terrain
- painting textures
- placing units
- changing unit allegiance
- making & testing a small battle

Back from holidays, I just discovered this nice first video of SS4 editor.

Great job, that's more easier when you fisrt start with Unity3D engine. Good job mate

@Kvantovy
How is the frame rate with big armies and maps? For example if you let 100 tanks shoot at each other.

And what is a "potato" CPU & GPU? ;)

you can try the test mod Jokker's Heaven and play until you get the big reinforcement. (defend the middle town)
Should be a 100 vehicles amount.

Here another "jump in point" video about hitpoints and changing behavior

"potato" CPU and GPU is internet slang and means basically: Bad PC :D

Yup :)

As for the big armies, tbh I was surprised to see how big were the polycounts of the models, when I took a look at the Beta files. And the funniest thing is - for what? The textures are 512x512 and we can't even zoom close on the units, so why not save some triangles and achieve better performance.

Sherman has e.g. more than 6200 triangles.

I know, but how bad exactly is it. An old dual core laptop with iGPU?

I'm asking because I'm trying to find out whether big battles are possible. I would test it myself, but I don't own Sudden Strike 4 yet. Before I buy I would like to know the frame rate (and CPU&GPU) in big battles to assess the potential for mods and big maps/battles like in previous Sudden Strike versions. But so far nobody tested this yet. Also nobody tested the maximum map size yet. :/

May be they made them for 4K where you can see the difference. But you are right. That is many triangles for a single unit.

I think the main bottleneck could be draw calls. Because this is still DX11.
To see fps, triangles("Tris") and the number of draw calls ("Batches") press the "Stats" button in the top right corner or use "Window->Profiler" for more detailed stats like VRAM usage.(How is VRAM usage by the way?)

There are ways to reduce draw calls:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW3Jt7quQmQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eA4Afhojxc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgkLQi5q85E

This should be possible in Sudden Strike 4 also. If you need more draw calls for every additional tree that would be bad. This would mean you have to reduce vegetation on maps with big battles. For example a big desert map.

Yes "greater" battles are possible but it takes alot of compile time to create. But if they can compare with "big" battles like in SuSt2 or SuSt3 - who knows in the moment. Creation need some month in the past and sure will need same in the future too.

The test map "Jokker's Heaven" is 2x2 but only 0,7 x1,4 used from the sub scenes of the mod.
In the moment it is not clear for me how to change the size at all but I guess it can be done in the meta data after creating one of the default sized map.
